Silence is represented by the names Mauni or Mauna. Therefore, on this particular day, the majority of Hindus observe a complete silence fast. People observe the vow of silence on this day to achieve the quality of perfect speech, according to mythology, to mark the birthday of the sage Manu. Apart from that, this day is very good for repenting and asking God for forgiveness. However, avoiding special activities on this day directly shields individuals from negative energy.
Mauni Amavasya 2023 falls in the middle of Magha according to the Hindu calendar. Because of this, it is also known as Maghi Amavasya. On this day, devotees swear to bathe in the holy Ganges water throughout the Magha month in order to be saved and have their sins forgiven. The holy water bathing season begins on Paush Purnima and lasts until Magha Purnima. On Mauni Amavasya, anyone who drinks and bathes in Ganges water contributes to knowledge.
